Waterloo Intelligent Systems Engineering Laboratory (WISE Lab) in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, in collaboration with the Waterloo Autonomous Vehicles Lab in the Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering Department, at the University of Waterloo are seeking an exceptional candidate for a Research Associate position, available immediately. The successful candidate will have extensive research expertise in machine learning or verification and validation of cyber-physical systems or both. The objective is to address the challenges of safety assurance of autonomous driving systems that rely on machine learning. The research will be conducted as part of University of Waterloo autonomous driving research program (autonomoose.net). Topics of interest include training and test dataset design and coverage criteria, property verification for neural networks, design of safety envelopes, extending neural networks with explanations, structural stability in learning, and open set recognition problem.

 

The successful candidate must have a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, along with a proven publication record and a record of research leadership. The successful candidate will be expected to lead research activities, work both independently and collaboratively, mentor graduate students, publish research results at top international research venues, and be willing and able to move back-and-forth between theory and practice. The WISE and WAVE Labs offer an enriched collaborative environment, including faculty collaborators in computer science, engineering, mechatronics, and systems design, high-tech industry partners, and a vibrant research program in autonomous driving. Based on qualifications a salary range of $70,000 to $90,000 for this full-time position will be considered. Initial appointment will be for one year. The successful candidate will have completed PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, with specialization in one or more of the following areas: machine learning, computer vision, sensor fusion, software verification, and robotics. The objective is to develop new methods and approaches to enable robust and fault-tolerant perception for autonomous vehicles. The research will be conducted as part of University of Waterloo autonomous driving research program (autonomoose.net). Topics of interest include training and test dataset design and coverage criteria, adversarial neural networks, extending neural networks with explanations, structural stability in learning, confidence estimation methods, and decision fusion.

The successful candidate will have completed PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, with specialization in control engineering or robotics. The objective is to develop new methods and approaches to safe trajectory planning and tracking for autonomous driving. The research will be conducted as part of University of Waterloo autonomous driving research program (autonomoose.net). Topics of interest include trajectory planning in uncertain and complex environments, planning and execution of emergency maneuvers, model-predictive control, planners and controllers that are correct by construction or amenable to verification by design, controller synthesis, and verification of hybrid systems. The position is funded by ERATO Project "Metamathematics for Systems Design".

The position is funded by ERATO Project "Metamathematics for Systems Design".

 

The successful candidate must have a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, along with a proven publication record and a record of research leadership. The successful candidate will be expected to lead research activities, work both independently and collaboratively, mentor graduate students, publish research results at top international research venues, and be willing and able to move back-and-forth between theory and practice. The GSD Lab and the ERATO project offer an enriched collaborative environment, including faculty collaborators in computer science, engineering, mechatronics, and systems design, and a vibrant research program in autonomous driving (autonomoose.org). Based on qualifications a salary range of $80,000 to $100,000 for this full-time position will be considered. Initial appointment will be for a fixed term until the end of a fiscal year (March 31).
